(NewsUSA) - When it comes to generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), the United States government needs to adjust its mission and tradecraft to advance American interests, according to experts at the Special Competitive Studies Project (SCSP), a bipartisan nonprofit organization.

Despite its current position as a global leader GenAI, the issue facing the United States is how to shape GenAI’s global use and function so that it reinforces these interests, according to a new report from SCSP.

The authors outline recommendations for a new model of statecraft and the creation of global institutions to chart a way for GenAI to be used for good, and to put guardrails in place to protect against negative consequences.

SCSP advises the U.S. government to bring together different departments, authorities, talents, and tools, and to establish domestic regulatory policies that also reflect a global context, to work alongside like-minded allies, but not to disadvantage the U.S. private sector in global competition.

Platforms Statecraft. A platform approach to foreign policy and GenAI should include an updated mission with competition around technology platforms, as well as joint efforts across government agencies, modernization, and sub-national diplomacy to ensure that U.S. policy is tied into domestic innovation at the state and local levels.

New Tools. The adoption of GenAI tools by the Department of State will change the way workforces do their jobs, but these high-tech tools do not replace decision-making by policy experts; instead, GenAI tools provide additional, and potentially novel, recommendations and solutions based on an amount of information that no one human can process as quickly as a machine. Agency-wide programs to leverage GenAI could include a centralized GenAI infrastructure, a tailored GenAI system to handle sensitive information, and training policy makers to understand how GI works and where human oversight is needed.

Global Frameworks. To manage GenAI as a geopolitical and transnational issue, SCSP recommends creating a leaders-level forum to bring together key nations and address the highest-level risks that GenAI may pose; a leaders-level agenda item on GenAI in bilateral dialogues between the U.S. and the People’s Republic of Chine to help manage strategic stability risks; and a working-level forum for like-minded national to explore positive use cases around GenAI and mitigate against practical challenges.

New York City, collaborating with platforms like Airbnb, is enforcing a law that requires short-term rental hosts to register with the Mayor's Office of Special Enforcement. This law, effective from early 2022, aims to curb unregistered rentals, with platforms like Airbnb prohibited from processing transactions for unregistered properties. 

Hosts now face stringent requirements, including being present during the guest's stay and not renting out entire homes. Despite these restrictions, Airbnb, which has over 39,000 listings in New York City, views the regulation as a de facto ban. The city's enforcement mirrors actions in other U.S. cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco, which also regulate short-term rentals. Meanwhile, Airbnb's share price remains resilient, recently boosted by its inclusion in the S&P 500.

Popular hunting locations like Cold Bay and the Izembek Refuge Area are known worldwide for trophy brown bears. Adding to the threat is the Willow Project by ConocoPhillips, an oil-drilling initiative first greenlit by the Trump administration in 2020. This project, focused on petroleum extraction to lessen U.S. oil imports, poses another significant challenge to the survival of Alaska's brown bear population.

(Matthew Du, NewsUSA Reporter) - Judge Lewis Kaplan ordered the jury in Sam Bankman-Fried’s trial to return Friday morning after dismissing them earlier Thursday. 

Kaplan presides over the trial of Bankman-Fried, who currently faces charges that include wire fraud, securities fraud, and conspiracy to commit money laundering about the operation of crypto exchange FTX.

The defense has questioned the former CEO on several topics. Still, foggy memory seems to be a common theme amongst many of Bankman-Fried’s answers, which comes in stark contrast to the claims that Bankman-Fried had made following the collapse of FTX and before his criminal charges.

“If children experience darkness all year long, and then someone like me, dressed in a fancy uniform, says, ‘I think we can help you a little bit,’ that can give at least some of them the hope they need, and they will go on to do great things,” says Staff Sergeant James Caldwell.

SSgt Caldwell is a United States Marine, and his seventeen-year connection with the Marine Toys for Tots Program and the Foster Care system goes back to his childhood, when he and his younger sister were placed in Foster Care. Now, as a Reservist, SSgt Caldwell is deeply involved with the Toys for Tots Program each Christmas. He recalls one event in particular that continues to inspire him.

“About eight years ago, I was a door greeter for a toy distribution day. I was in my dress blues, and we had a group of Foster Care children arriving. I handed a young girl a bag of toys.  She looked at me, reached into her bag and handed me a stuffed animal, and said, ‘someone needs to make sure you get a toy, too.’”

That moment when the little girl gave him one of her toys is one that SSgt Caldwell often replays in his mind, and he knows he is making a difference to boys and girls growing up in difficult circumstances similar to his.

“Everybody goes through life looking for something that will fulfill them. I was given a great opportunity as a child. So, I value the chance to give back and show these kids the possibility of a brighter future,” he says.

According to the CFP Board Consumer Sentiment Survey — Trust, But Verify, 71% of investors indicated little to no trust in the financial planning advice received from social media. (NewsUSA) - Since 1976, Diveheart founder and president Jim Elliott knew that scuba diving was therapeutic and beneficial for people in general, and especially for individuals with disabilities.

The son of an Army veteran with a disability and the father of a blind daughter, Elliott was tutored through boy scouts by a one arm scout master and walked his Cub Scout friend Timmy, who had cerebral palsy, to school to discourage bullies. These experiences gave Elliott a solid foundation for working with individuals with a variety of disabilities and the sometimes less-than-friendly world around them.

As a young journalist at the College of DuPage, Elliott had no special interest in scuba diving, but took a scuba class in case he ever had to interview someone like the famous diver Jacques Cousteau. It was love at first dive!  By 1997, Elliott had spent decades guiding and teaching blind skiers; he then became a scuba diving instructor and worked with people with a variety of disabilities.

In 2001, Elliott founded Diveheart, a non-profit dedicated to serving children, veterans, and others with all types of disabilities, using adaptive scuba and scuba therapy as tools to help them “Imagine the possibilities” in their lives. Elliott never thought that Diveheart would be more than a small local charity. However, by the time of the COVID-19 pandemic, in 2020, Diveheart was operating approximately 200 pool programs and scheduled to lead 14 adaptive scuba trips for people with disabilities.

The forced closures during the pandemic allowed time for reflection, and Elliott and colleagues conceived a plan for the world’s deepest warm water therapy pool facility. This facility would be a destination to be used for research, rehabilitation, education, training, and provide vocational opportunities for veterans and others, not only with disabilities, but of all abilities.

Fast forward to 2023! Two patents later and millions of dollars in pro-bono services and land donation guarantees, Diveheart has completed a feasibility study and revealed its deep pool design in the hope of garnering millions of dollars to build the world’s first deep warm water therapy pool facility in the United States.
